Why move to Liskeard?

Liskeard is an ancient stannary and market town on the fringes of Bodmin Moor above the Looe river valley, west of the Tamar. The town’s boom years during the height of the copper mining industry are in evidence in its grand buildings and remains of the industry in the neighbouring countryside are of particular note to history enthusiasts. Liskeard has great connections; just 15 minutes’ commute to Plymouth and 20 minutes to the beautiful beaches at Looe and Polperro.

There is a good selection of mainly independent shops in the town, including antique and vintage emporiums in all its pedestrianised streets, plus the essential high street stores. There are Aldi and Morrison’s supermarkets, a thriving farmers’ market, an indoor pannier market and one of the last cattle markets in the country still to take place in a town.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the town – pubs, cafés and coffee shops. Eliot House Hotel is nearby and comes highly recommended for accommodation and food.

An area with an important history

The Hurlers stone circles, close to the nearby village of Minions may be the best examples of ceremonial circles in the south west. Legend has it that they are the remains of men petrified for playing hurling on a Sunday.

Great local schools

Liskeard and the surrounding area has good schools; these include several primary schools, including the Ofsted-rated ‘outstanding’ St Cleer School, and Liskeard School and Community College which is rated ‘good’ and includes a sixth form.

Good transport links

Liskeard is on the A38 and access to Plymouth is quick and easy. Being in the middle of the county means that both the south and the north coasts are easily accessible.

The railway station runs regular services further into Cornwall and to Plymouth, Reading and London Paddington and cross-country services to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

Newquay Airport is only 40 minutes away with routes to UK and Irish airports as well as European destinations.
